Cryogenic Treatment


cryogenic treatment is the process of treating work pieces to cryogenic temperatures (i.e. below −190 °C (−310 °F)) in order to remove residual stresses and improve wear resistance on steels. In addition to seeking enhanced stress relief and stabilization, or wear resistance, cryogenic treatment is also sought for its ability to improve corrosion resistance by precipitating micro-fine eta carbides, which can be measured before and after in a part using a quantimet.

The process has a wide range of applications from industrial tooling to the improvement of musical signal transmission. Some of the benefits of cryogenic treatment include longer part life, less failure due to cracking, improved thermal properties, better electrical properties including less electrical resistance, reduced coefficient of friction, less creep and walk, improved flatness, and easier machining.

Cryogenic machining is a machining process where the traditional flood lubro-cooling liquid (an emulsion of oil into water) is replaced by a jet of either liquid nitrogen (LN2) or pre-compressed carbon dioxide (CO2). Cryogenic machining is useful in rough machining operations, in order to increase the tool life. It can also be useful to preserve the integrity and quality of the machined surfaces in finish machining operations. Cryogenic machining tests have been performed by researchers since several decades, but the actual commercial applications are still limited to very few companies. Both cryogenic machining by turningand milling are possible.

Standing the test of time


Despite being in its 21st year the market for Bluetooth continues to grow. To put it in perspective in 2000, there were a total of 800,000 Bluetooth enabled devices shipped in a single year. Today, it’s 10million per day. Martin Woolley, Developer Relations Manager EMEA at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), the official standards organisation for the wireless communication technology, suggests that Bluetooth’s survival and popularity is owed to its clever evolution that has made it applicable to new and relevant use cases. Now there are three Bluetooth technologies, but arguably the biggest milestone emerged 8 years ago with the release of Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).

BLE allows for super-efficient, wireless devices - and paved the way for applications that were previously not conceivable. For example, the smart home relies on battery-powered sensors hidden in non-accessible places. With the introduction of BLE radio, the community also sought to address the market opportunity for standardised, lower-cost location services solutions. With forecasts anticipating more than 400m products shipping per year by 2022, it appears it’s been successful in achieving that goal.

The location technology generally falls into two categories - proximity and positioning. These use the BLE radio to determine if two Bluetooth devices are in range of each other and, in many cases, use received signal strength (RSSI) measurements to estimate the distance between the two devices. With proximity solutions, one Bluetooth device is used to determine if another Bluetooth device is within range and how far away it is. Point of interest (PoI) information and item finding are two popular types of use case. As for the future, Woolley said that “the community never sits still”. He pointed to next generation Bluetooth audio as the technology’s ensuing innovation.

The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider


The High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) is a major upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that is completed by 2026. This new design boosts the machine's luminosity by a factor of between five and seven, allowing 10 times more data to be accumulated, providing a better chance to see rare processes and improving statistically marginal measurements.

Luminosity is a way of measuring the performance of an accelerator: it is proportional to the number of collisions that occur in a given amount of time. The HL-LHC can perform detailed studies of the new particles observed at the LHC, such as the Higgs boson. It enables the observation of rare processes that were inaccessible at the previous sensitivity levels. More than 15 million Higgs bosons can be produced each year, for example, compared to the 1.2 million produced in 2011-2012.


The development of the HL-LHC depends on several technological innovations that are exceptionally challenging to researchers – such as cutting-edge Tesla superconducting magnets, very compact and ultra-precise superconducting cavities for beam rotation, and 300-metre-long high-power superconducting links with zero energy dissipation. Together, these upgrades help to advance and further refine the knowledge already gained from the Higgs boson and provide fresh insights into so-called "New Physics", a more fundamental and general theory than that of the Standard Model.

Self-learning software (SLS)


Building on the industry shift toward SaaS, a new trend in the software space is emerging that combines both SaaS and AI. Leading companies from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and IBM have begun offering their AI infrastructure as a service to their clients. In other words, no longer is AI and machine learning accessible to only to software giants, now any company and developer can access online AI resources to build self-learning software (SLS).

At home, this could mean having an SLS system manage your future smart home, including tasks like pre-heating your home before you arrive or keeping track of groceries you need to buy. By the 2020s and into the 2030s, these SLS systems will play a vital role in the corporate, government, military, and consumer markets, gradually helping each improve their productivity and reduce waste of all kinds.
The only way the SaaS and SLS models work is if the Internet (or the infrastructure behind it) continues to grow and improve, alongside the computing and storage hardware that runs the ‘cloud' these SaaS/SLS systems operate on. The coming decade will see the next evolution, the next quantum leap in communication and interconnectivity, entirely intermediated by a range of future computer interfaces and it may just reshape what it means to be human.

The future of military cloaking devices


cloaking device is a hypothetical or fictional stealth technology that can cause objects, such as spaceships or individuals, to be partially or wholly invisible to parts of the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. However, over the entire spectrum, a cloaked object scatters more than an uncloaked object. This potential cloaking device would stop shock waves through a wall of heated, ionized air. This heated, ionized air would safeguard the solider by forming a protective barrier around them. The protective barrier does not directly protect them from the shock-wave. Instead, it causes the shock wave to bend around them.


Shock waves that occur from explosions go right through peoples’ bodies and cause severe head trauma. This cloaking device would help solve the other half of the problem. Even if the shrapnel is nowhere near them, the force incurred by the shock wave is enough to create serious injury. A detector spots an explosion right before the shock wave follows. A curved shape generator, connected to a large power source, produces electricity like a lightning bolt. The curved shaped generator heats up the particles in the air, thereby effectively changing the speed of the shock waves.

The bending occurs when the particles of the shock wave changes speed. Curved shaped generators aren’t the only way to protect against shock waves. Lasers, as well as a strip of metal placed along a truck, are capable of offering this protection. Both of these things produce the same ionizing effect and bend the shock wave as it changes speed. The only issue with this is the amount of power that it would require. Reducing the amount of power needed would make this cloaking device a reality.

Using joysticks, steering wheels and other peripherals can make the VR gaming experience even more immersive. Some predict that the VR gaming experience will in future include temperature changes, wind and even smells to add even more authenticity.

Game Streaming Services Go Mainstream


In a year when there’s going to be a great deal of attention placed on new entrants to the video streaming market (Apple, Disney, Time Warner, etc.), the surprise breakout winner in cloud-based entertainment in 2019 could actually be game streaming services, such as Microsoft’s Project xCloud (based on its Xbox gaming platform) and other possible entrants.The idea with game streaming is to enable people to play top-tier games across a wide range of both older and newer PCs, smartphones, and other devices.



Given the tremendous growth in PC and mobile gaming, along with the rise in popularity of eSports, the consumer market is primed for a service (or two) that would allow gamers to play popular high-quality gaming titles across a wide range of different device types and platforms. Of course, game streaming isn’t a new concept, and there have been several failed attempts in the past. The challenge is delivering a timely, engaging experience in the often-unpredictable world of cloud-driven connectivity.


Most importantly, however, are software advancements that can enable technologies like split or collaborative rendering, as well as AI-based predictions of actions that need to be taken or content that needs to be preloaded. The strong growth in game streaming services that are less hardware dependent may imply a negative impact on gaming-specific PCs, GPUs and other game-focused hardware in fact, the opposite is likely to be true. The gaming service will give them the opportunity to play (or continue playing) those games in situations or locations where they don’t have access to their primary gaming devices.

Nano Materials


Nano materials are chemical substances or materials that are manufactured and used at a very small scale. The nano materials are developed to exhibit novel characteristics compared to the same material without Nano scale features, such as increased strength, chemical reactivity or conductivity.


The Nano materials that are naturally occurring (e.g., volcanic ash, soot from forest fires) or are generated as incidental (unintentional) by-products of combustion processes (e.g., welding, diesel engines) are usually physically and chemically heterogeneous and often termed ‘ultra-fine particles’. Engineered nano materials, on the other hand, are intentionally produced and designed with physio-chemical properties for a specific purpose or function.

They are already being used in the manufacture of scratch proof eyeglasses, crack-resistant paints, anti-graffiti coatings for walls, transparent sunscreens, stain-repellent fabrics, self-cleaning windows and ceramic coatings for solar cells. Nanotechnology can be used to increase the safety of cars.

More Brands will move to becoming Life-as-a-Service


More consumer brands are following the lead of Netflix, Spotify, Harry’s and others in trying to encourage customers to see them as ‘a service to subscribe to’ as well as a product to buy. There is a distinction between the purely digital services and the physical brands creating a virtual service but both types are trying to introduce more touchpoints and create a stronger relationship with the buyer.


 Over the past six months we have seen this model extend into previously unexpected categories. Xbox has introduced an ‘All Access’ subscription programme. A single monthly payment gives users an Xbox console, Xbox Live, and access to streaming games. Nespresso has introduced a similar model for its coffee machines and pods — by paying a minimal amount for the machine and commiting to membership and a subscription for coffee pods, customers are moving from buying a machine to buying a lifestyle.
Uber and Lyft are both testing or introducing subscription models in the US, encouraging people to pay a monthly amount for a number of short rides, or even to protect them from paying surge pricing. LaaS should be deployed carefully, depending on factors like the value proposition and frequency of purchase, to build service into the offering. Brands selling physical products should try to keep the experience special — use one-offs, birthday deliveries, and layers of membership to personalise the offering. It may be better to partner with an existing service, or find a complimentary service than establish your own programme, depending on the role the brand is trying to play in its customers’ lives.

eSports continue to surge


eSports have momentum, especially with young demographics, perhaps most visibly in the Epic Games battle-royale phenomenon Fortnite, with the largest payer base and the biggest audience. In the month of August 2018, Epic Games hosted 78.3 million Fortnite players.



The eSports, which racked up 300 million viewers worldwide last year, is on track to surpass a billion dollars for the first time this year, across all markets, and not just from indirect revenue sources, like advertising and sponsorship. Merchandise sales, ticket sales, and other items that consumers purchase directly make up about a quarter of that income.
 In the first week of that same month, viewers on the social streaming platform Twitch watched an aggregate 28.5 million hours of Fortnite play. But as more broadcasters spend to fit eSports into their programming, they may learn that eSports — and the video game platforms on which the industry is built — are more complex than they appear.


The ‘mobile workforce’ will dominate the new economy


The Industrial Revolution was initiated through new technology — the steam engine — but its impact was felt widely across where people lived and worked, with whole new communities and social effects resulting. Cities, offices, suburbs, factories arose and, in time, the current technological revolution will have just as great an effect, making everyone as mobile as they wish to be.



Gig economy is re-shaping the workforce dynamics. Technology has fundamentally altered the nature and perception of work. Work and workforce are no more limited to the four walls of an organisation. The fourth industrial revolution will rejig workforce model in a manner which will disrupt and uproot already existing business models. Gig economy has become one of the leading frontiers in the HR industry, hinting towards a rapid change in the traditional sourcing and management of manpower. Times Jobs conducted a comprehensive survey on the rise of gig economy and its impact on HR fraternity. 
 New economies will grow away from cities and new social structures will evolve, enabled by this mobile, flexible and adaptive way of working. Requesting flexible working has become a legal right in some countries, and even where it isn’t, it’s becoming an essential for modern work and the only way to compete for the best people in an increasingly febrile “war for talent”.


Nanotechnology


Nanotechnology is the science of understanding and manipulating materials on a nanometre scale. A nanometer is just one billionth of a metre, or the length of a few atoms placed end-to-end. Already nanotechnology is being used in the production of some microprocessors, batteries, computer displays, paints and cosmetics. But this really is just the begnning of a manufacturing and medical revolution.



The Nanotechnology is defined as the study and use of structures between 1 nanometer and 100 nanometers in size. To give you an idea of how small that is, it would take eight hundred 100 nanometer particles side by side to match the width of a human hair. While this is the most common definition of nanotechnology researchers with various focuses have slightly different definitions.
There are many different points of view about the nanotechnology. These differences start with the definition of nanotechnology. Some define it as any activity that involves manipulating materials between one nanometer and 100 nanometers. However the original definition of nanotechnology involved building machines at the molecular scale and involves the manipulation of materials on an atomic (about two-tenths of a nanometer) scale.

           Automation Machines are the use of electronics and computer-controlled devices to assume control of processes. The aim of automation is to boost efficiency and reliability. In most cases, however, automation replaces labor. In fact, economists today fear that new technology will eventually push up unemployment rates significantly.

            In many manufacturing plants today, robotic assembly lines are progressively carrying out functions that humans used to do. The term ‘manufacturing’ refers to convertingu raw materials and components into finished goods, usually on a large scale in a factory.
               The automation encompasses many key elements, systems, and job functions in virtually all industries. It is especially prevalent in manufacturing, transportation, facility operations, and utilities. Additionally, national defence systems are becoming increasingly automated. The automation today exists in all functions within industry including integration, installation, procurement, maintenance, and even marketing and sales.

1000-fold increase in computer storage capacity


The densest solid-state memory ever created could soon exceed the capabilities of current computer storage devices by 1,000 times, thanks to a new technique scientists at the University of Alberta have perfected."Essentially, you can take all 45 million songs on iTunes and store them on the surface of one quarter," said Roshan Achal, PhD student in Department of Physics and lead author on the new research. "Five years ago, this wasn't even something we thought possible."

His team used the same technology they developed in previous research to build atomic-scale circuits – which allows the quick removal or replacement of single hydrogen atoms. This enables the memory to be rewritable, offering tremendous potential for more efficient solid-state drives. Previous discoveries of atomic-scale computer storage were stable only at extremely low temperatures. 

But the new memory developed by Achal's team works at real-world temperatures and can withstand normal use. The technology has immediate applications for archiving data, according to Achal. Next steps will include boosting the read and write speeds, for even more flexible applications.
